Hey, I'm Raszka and I decided to join the team to tell you a little bit about Australia. It's a beautiful country with great things to see, amazingly positive people and interesting history. Today I'll start with the language. In comments below you can give me ideas of what you want to know about this country :)

       

Sun, beaches, kangaroos, koalas, Great Barrier Reef, Sydney Opera, Uluru, Abos, Vegemite… These are the most famous associations people have when thinking about the Ozland, so a magnificent, well-established economically and socially country –Australia. For big majority of us it’s an exotic land, that we know little about. We all have seen movies and pictures of this place, we know that there are deserts, it’s a multicultural society, and that they speak English. However, a question appears – is it really English? 

Many people, even native speakers from the UK/USA, when they come to Australia, have many problems with understanding Aussies. And it’s not surprising when you hear a real Australian speaking, especially when he/she lives in the Outback. 

Here are some tips and common rules if you want to become a real Aussie!

1)     Make everything shorter!

  For Australians even their country’s name – Australia - is too long, so they call it Aussie Land, the Oz, Down Under or Strayla.

2)     They have their own words…

Billabong – rzeka, jezioro, jakiś zbiornik wodny

Bogan/Bloke – gość, dres, bardzo potocznie i kolokwialnie o facecie

Bities – wszystkie gryzące owady – komary, muchy

Sheila – dziewczyna

Smokes – papierosy

Roo – kangur

(the) Bush – po prostu część nie miejska, czyli tak zwany Outback.

Footpath – chodnik

Heaps - dużo, wiele, mnóstwo

Bangas – kiełbaski, parówki, często spotykane też jako „kangabangas”, czyli… parówki z kangurów.

… and be careful not to confuse them with different meanings in American and British English!
