[11] Idioms part 1

I prepared a list of some idioms. They are really useful in films, books etc. and can be quite difficult for people, who learn English.

with ABIDE
Idiom
Example sentence
Can’t abide sb/sth/doing sth – nie cierpieć kogoś/czegoś/ robienia czegoś
I can’t abide her! She’s so spoilt!


with ABOVE
Idiom
Example sentence
To be above (doing) sth - nie zniżyć się do (zrobienia) czegoś
I’m above working in this sleazy place!
To be above one’s head / understanding – przekraczać czyjeś zdolności pojmowania
How they can be together? It’s above my head/understanding!
To be above nothing – nie cofnąć się przed niczym
He is so determined that he will be above nothing.

with ABROAD
Idiom
Example sentence
To be all abroad – mieć mętlik w głowie
Im’ all abroad. I don’t know what to do.
To get (to spread) abroad – rozejść się (np. o pogłosce, wiadomości)
The news of her party got abroad at once.

with ACCORD
Idiom
Example sentence
With one accord - jednogłośnie
With one accord we decided to get part in this match.

with ACCOUNT
Idiom
Example sentence
By all accounts – wszyscy mówią, że
By all accounts, he is a very good teacher.
On no account – pod żadnym pozorem
On no account must you enter this room.
To call sb to account – zażądać od kogoś wyjaśnień
She called him to account for his unusual behavior.

With ACE
Idiom
Example sentence
To have an ace up one’s sleeve – mieć asa w rękawie
He was very calm because he have an ace up his sleeve.
To hold the aces – mieć wszystkie atuty w ręku, panować nad sytuacją
He felt confident of success because he held the aces.
Within an ace of sth – o włos od czegoś
She was within an ace of a complete failure.
