[38] Non-continuous verbs

Hello everyone!

In English there are some verbs which haven't got a continuous form in some meaning. They are called non-continuous verbs.

   There are four groups:

1) Verbs describing sensory impressions: hear, see, smell, taste, feel, look.

These words haven't got continuous form usually when we use 'can' with them.

Examples:

This tea tastes awfull. Ta herbata smakuje okropnie.

but:

I'm tasting my coffe. Smakuję moją kawę.

These roses smell great. Te róże świetnie pachną.

but:

The dog is smelling the food in its dish. Pies wącha jedzenie w swojej misce.

2) Verbs related with mind: depend, believe, understand, think, imagine, know, mean, suppose, realise, recognise, seem, forget, remember.

Examples:

I don't believe in ghost. Nie wierzę w duchy.

They think she is beautiful. Oni sądzą, że ona jest piękna.

but:

I'm thinking about our exam. Myślę o naszym egzaminie.

3) Verbs of likes: like, dislike, hate, pefer, love.

Examples:

Do you like handball? Czy lubisz piłkę ręczną?

I hate astronomy! Nienawidzę astronomii!

She loves that shop. Ona kocha ten sklep.

       * So McDonald is wrong;) 

4) Other verbs: have (possess), belong to, own, contain, consist, want, appear, need.

Examples:

This shoes belongs to Karolina's sister. Te buty należą do siostry Karoliny.

She has a car. Ona ma samochód.
